Laptop Care Tips.

At WellInfo, we love to answer questions about computers and give laptop care tips.

One of the most common questions we're asked is about leaving your laptop/computer on all the time.

So, let us explain.

Heat is not good for getting the best out of your laptop/computer. As long as your laptop or computer is switched on it is producing heat. The wear and tear  adds up over the long term and can damage your laptop/computers parts and slow it down.

Turning your laptop off when not using it will prolong the life of the parts. However, leaving your laptop/computer on for downloading or for short periods of time is okay. Turning it on/off is okay with newer model laptop/computers these days too.

Best practice is to turn it off at night and to restart it in the morning. Nice and fresh everyday. Your computer needs to rest too. This will help your laptop / computer run at its optimal best and reduce wear on components and parts over long term.

Don't despair if your Laptop / computer is running slow. Bring it to Wellinfo and we'll get it going again. We are like a Laptop / Computer health retreat.

This is great advice, thank you. I was in the habit of leaving my laptop on overnight but I'll turn it off now and hopefully it will last a bit longer.

Thanks for your comment Gail. Yes, better to let it sleep and rest for the night. John Admin Wellinfo Dubai

Thank you for the advice. I tend to work my laptop very hard and I was getting in the habit of putting it in sleep mode rather than switching it off. In your opinion what do you think, is it better to shut it down or is it ok to put it in sleep mode?

Thanks for your comments. Sleep is particularly useful if you’re stepping away from your laptop for a small amount of time. It’s also a good idea to shut down (or at least restart) your PC occasionally. Most Windows users have noticed that Windows needs an occasional reboot. But most of the time, hibernate or sleep should be just fine. Hope this helps.

Gah, I am so guilty of this. My guy broke my laptop and so I've been using his backup one for the last couple of months. I am on a guest user so EVERYTHING gets deleted when I turn it off and its such a hassle. I have been putting it to sleep almost every day but to actually shutting down. Really, I just need to have a new user made for me but I've been lazy!

I tend to leave my laptop on when I'm not using it in the daytime. Sometimes, 1-2 hours. I'm not sure if it will affect the performance on my laptop or not. But I make sure to switch it off at night.

Hi Yvonne. If your not using it for 1-2 hours during the day then putting your laptop in sleep mode is the best option.
